Calling this Phantom model “portable” may even be a bit of a stretch, as it weighs in at around 12 pounds (or the equivalent of four Macbook Air notebooks), but if you compare its capability to act as a server, then Eurocom’s achievement to fit all relevant server components into a notebook form factor, then you certainly see a remarkable product reveal itself.

Apple Mac 25th Anniversary: A personal take

Apple Macintosh computer, model M001, with keyboard and mouse. The Apple Macintosh was designed by Steve Jobs to be as 'user-friendly' as possible.

More than 21 years ago, I got my hands on an Apple Mac for the first time. It was a Mac Plus, one of those little cream-coloured boxes with a built-in, black-and-white 9in screen that we all thought looked so wackily futuristic in the way the DMC DeLorean had earlier that decade.

I was a sub editor working on a local newspaper in Kent. I wrote headlines, checked facts and spelling and designed the odd page. I had trained using pen and paper and moved on to editing on terminals hooked up to a mini system. In 1988, our first PCs had arrived – machines built around a blistering Intel 286 processor and Microsoft DOS. Editing was now in colour but it was still command-based – entering changes to copy was a matter of inputting code into galleys of type.

Racing with Ferrari

The latest in Acer's line of notebooks designed in collaboration with Ferrari, this laptop has a 12.1-inch screen and weighs just 3.5 pounds. But the Taiwanese and Italian designers certainly haven't skimped on features, cramming a lot into that small package. The Acer-Ferrari 1000 notebook PC is powered by an AMD Turion processor and includes a metal touchpad and a carbon-fiber cover to make the exterior especially sturdy. Acer even boasts that the computer's weave pattern is designed to evoke the checkered flag at a race.

Security

Computer security is important! Like we mentioned before, we all work and play on our personal computers. Unfortunately, sometimes malware, viri, spyware, and just plain general unwanted software works it's way in to your life and becomes a real problem. We have seen computers so saturated that they take over 30 minutes to boot! Let us help! We can diagnose and fix your computer and teach you some of the latest "best practices" to avoid unwanted software in the future.

Computers 747 - Small Laptops Are Latest Craze

Computers 747 - Mini laptops are all the rage in the computer world. These micro computers are the smallest, lightest, and often the cheapest forms of mobile PCs.

Mini laptops have changed drastically over the last few years. Whereas small laptops used to cost around $3,000 and weigh 3-5 pounds, today's mini laptops can be purchased for about $500 and weigh less than 3 pounds.

Most mini laptops come with built-in webcams, which is a convenient feature. They also come with Wi-Fi connectivity, which is a must for travelers.

On the down side, none of the affordably priced mini laptops have CD or DVD drives. Additionally, the screens are much too small to use without having to squint.

Use a firewall as a gatekeeper between your computer and the Internet

A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that filters all Internet traffic between your computer and the Internet. It works to either block or permit Internet traffic to and from your computer. You can use the firewall to better protect your computer from intrusion by offensive websites, spam and unauthenticated logins from potential hackers.A firewall is essential for those that use their computers to browse the Internet.

Pen Size Computers

A very exciting future is around the corner for computing. Check out the latest in small computers.

The design concept uses five different pens to make a computer. One pen is a CPU, one a camera, another creates a virtual keyboard, and yet another projects the visual output and thus the display. One more pen is a phone. All five pens can rest in a holding block which recharges the batteries and holds the mass storage. Each pen communicates wirelessly. But this is a conceptual prototype, meaning it does not exist in real form……..yet. The technology already exists for the keyboard and projector.

The prototype was designed by Toru Ichihash of Japan and introduced in 2003 at the ITU World Telecom Exhibition in Tokyo. It was described as a Pen-Style Personal Networking Gadget Package or P-ISM. Can you guess who Ichihash’s inspiration was? Why James Bond of course!

MIU Hybrid Dual Portable computer

The Hybrid Dual Portable Computer or HDPC is the latest device of its kind that will be out in the markets soon. If anyone wonders what an HDPC is, they may be surprised to know that it is a combination of the portable and heavy-duty Ultra-Mobile Portable Computers and the technologically efficient and innovative smartphones.

The brains and the creator behind this super heck of a godly device is a company named MIU or Mobile Intelligent Ubiquitous. Maybe they have already known it since they created this gadget, but to those who aren't, they just put power into every gizmo geek's hands.

The HDPC uses Windows XP as its operating system. This gives it every capability to launch all Windows applications. Though this may not have wireless capabilities like the Bluetooth 2.0 or the WiFi, it has a VGA camera for video chatting and a 3-megapixel camera, for taking pictures. In addition, it has a Digital TV receiver that is fully compatible with the DVB-T or Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial. Lastly, under the HDPC's screen is a QWERTY keyboard.

What makes this gadget tick despite its bulkiness is that there are no limitations when it comes to video and audio formats because the user does not have to convert audio and video files if they have to play them on the HDPC. Convenience plays a part in browsing the internet, doing text messages or using IM applications. Thanks to its QWERTY keyboard.

Weighing at around 387 grams and having a volume size of 160 x 65 x 25 millimeters, this gizmo whose nickname may be the same as innovation may fetch around $500. If you are expecting its release into the market, might as well expect its eventual success as well.

Gateway M-6750 Notebook PC with Cores Duo and 3GB RAMReview

I have come to a point where I really do think that most desktop computers can be scrapped for laptop or notebook computers. Seeing as my home computer is a Pentium 4 and I’ve been using that for six years, with a few repairs along the way. The Gateway M-6750 provides enough processing power for all applications besides games and a 15″ monitor that gives enough desktop space.
For under $600 the Gateway M-6750 notebook computer comes with a nice shiny finish combined with polished aluminum looking edge around the keyboard. The looks are good, and that’s not bad for a nicely priced laptop.
The Core2 Duo processor, although a mobile version, will give enough power for office type applications, web browsing, listening to music or playing videos. The processor is combined with 3GB of RAM and the Windows Vista operating system.
Some of the main features are
1.66GHz Intel Core2 Duo CPU
3GB of RAM
Windows Vista Home
DVD writer
Memory card port
Speakers
Webcam
Network port
802.11n wireless
These features together will do well for a home office or personal use.
The 3GB of memory is good for Windows Vista as it needs more memory than previous operating systems, which is usually true anyway I guess. The dual core processor helps too.
Networking features are good, and having 802.11n wireless, which supports up to 300MB/s transfer speeds allows the fastest possible speeds over wireless networks.
The graphics uses up to 384MB of main memory. This is good for increasing the graphics quality, but not so good as it uses up more of the memory that could be used by other programs on the computer. With that said however, there is plenty of memory to go around and programs won’t be left wanting with still 2GB of memory after the graphics and Windows’ needs.
There are three USB slots and an Express Card slot for system expansion.
Finally, the 15 inch monitor supports up to 1280 x 800 screen resolution. This is spot on for a monitor of this size and gives enough extra room to squeeze two web browsers side-by-side, but keeps them at a readable size.

Getting the Most Out of Old Computers

If you're like me, you've amassed a fair collection of computer components and devices. Not because I'm an enthusiast or because I spend more on computers than the common man. Rather, because computers get old and software constantly requires more and more power to run. Frequently, we find that new technological breakthroughs make old hardware that was just fine seem quaint. Be it a race toward higher clock speeds, faster front side buses, multiple cores, etc, computers become disused and replaced. Green attitudes have dissuaded people from tossing out components that are, for all intents and purposes, quite harmful to the environment. Moreover, current operating systems are becoming more power hungry let alone the software that runs on them. It's easy for Firefox to consume 30-40 megs of memory on Google's fairly spartan home page. Though, when 2 GB of memory is standard, 40 megs is a drop in the bucket. 10 years ago, that was not that case.
So, what do you do with these computers? Many people will take them to recycling centers. Others will keep them and let them collect dust (as humans appear to be, by nature, packrats). Others covertly throw them out in dumpsters in an open show of apathy. However, few will use them again. What's interesting about these computers is that in many cases they're perfectly useable. What's even more interesting is that you can maintain a high amount of usability with completely free software. Here at Benchmark Reviews, we'll provide our list of uses for recycled computers.

Radio Shack TRS-80, 1977

Don French, a buyer for the consumer electronic chain Tandy Radio Shack, was convinced that the company ought to offer a personal computer. Initially Radio Shack, which had experienced phenomenal growth selling audio equipment and citizen's band radios in its chain of stores across the country, was skeptical: computers were difficult to set up and use, and Radio Shack's customers were typically interested in low prices and easy of use, not in the underlying technology.
Although Radio Shack stores did sell wires, switches, and circuit parts for the hobbyist, its main customers neither knew nor cared much about what went on inside the "black boxes" they bought. Eventually the company relented and in the summer of 1977 introduced the TRS-80, at a base price of only $400. It was indeed a complete machine, although the base model had only 4K bytes of memory and could not handle lowercase letters. One could expand its storage and input/output by purchasing an Expansion Interface at additional cost. But it did work as advertised, and the TRS-80 easily met Tandy's sales projections. The company soon introduced advanced models with more internal memory and disk drives instead of cassettes for entering programs.

Public Computers [Hagerty Library]

The computers on the second floor are constantly taken up by people checking their e-mail so that one can’t look up a book. Can we have at least one computer dedicated entirely to book look-up (since this is a library after all)?
Thanks for your suggestion. This summer we are starting on some renovations that will mean many more computers in the atrium areas of the second and third floors. We will also be reinstalling computers on the look-up stands scattered around the stacks on the second and third floors. We hope you enjoy the new computers!

Laptop Computers 365 - Colored Laptops

Welcome to Laptop Computers 365! Colored laptop computers are a fun way to make using technology even more fun. If you search the internet for laptops the majority of the laptops that come up are not colored brightly and appear rather plain and boring.

One website that I came across in my search for fun colored laptop comptuers is http://www.colorwarepc.com. Here you can not only customize the color of your Mp3 players, smart phones, and HD TV's, but you can also find some awesome options for a customized colored laptop.

While they don't offer customization quite yet in tons of laptop models, you have the option of quite a few Mac laptops as well as a few Dell models. You can either buy a new laptop already colored from the company, or else if you have one of the models they will work with you can send yours in for color changes.

The Mac Plus is the first computer I ever used. The PET is the only one that does anything useful. The other two lack software (floppy disks for the Apple IIe, hard disk for the Mac Plus). I could probably find it if I looked hard enough.

Acer Passes Dell in PC Sales in Third Quarter of 2009

Boston (DbTechNo) - It is being reported that Acer has just passed Dell and is now the second largest computer vendor in the world.
This is a result of a boombing third quarter when it comes to PC sales, and the back to school time of year that saw a reduction in the price of netbook computers.
Dell have long been thought of as a powerhouse in the PC industry but now that they have been surpassed by Acer one has to wonder what Dell will do to bounce back.
According to reports, shippments of Acer computers jumped by an astounding 25.6 percent to reach 10.96 million units, outperforming Dell, who shipped 9.95 million units.
Acer is more willing to adapt to a competitive market when it comes to laptop and netbook prices and have thus saw an increase in market share.
Acer ended the third quarter of 2009 with 14% of the market, to Dell’s 12.7 percent.

Dell laptop computers will take advantage of white space

The Federal Commission of Communications decided recently to open a part of the spectrum ranging from 521MHz to 698MHz, which at the moment is assigned for television broadcasting. This has created a new opportunity for technological companies.
Hewlett-Packard, Google and Dell have been fighting to open up this spectrum, as known as “white space”, to provide an additional choice of wireless broadband for the users. The defenders of this idea claim that the TV spectrum is able to carry better broadband signals significantly farther than Wi-Fi, and that opening up the white space will allow the expansion of the market for new devices like smartphones.
Dell has just announced that its objective is to “integrate” the white space into its new products, including all type of laptops and other devices that are able to access the Internet in a wireless way. Anyway, the company have not announced any dates when the technology would be added.
Originally, the 2.4GHz spectrum was not considered useful for communications because microwave ovens operate in the same frequency, some interferences can be easily generated and it doesn’t offer efficient penetration of physical objects like walls or furniture.

Computers

A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.
Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs).[1] Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space.[2] Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous.

Pret-a-Porte Personal Computers Set to Get More Stylish

Personal computers have come a long way from dull grey boxes made by IBM to ultra-trendy systems like Voodoo Envy, Dell XPS One or Sony Vaio. Unfortunately, average mainstream personal computers still cannot boast with extravagant design, but that is going to change next year, we believe.

Get the Best Value on Laptop and Desktop Computers with Lenovo eCoupon Codes

Computers are now inherent in the lives of millions of people around the world. Many of us can't spend the day without taking a glimpse at our computer to check our emails or to do some work-related or personal tasks. There are people who spend almost all of their waking hours sitting in front of computers. Much of our lifestyles are now reliant on technology, and computers are among the indispensable elements in people's lives.
I myself am so strongly reliant on computers that I sometimes feel that my electronic notebook is taking over my life instead of me controlling it. I just feel uneasy if a couple of hours go by without me going online to check my emails and my instant messages. If I'm in the middle of nowhere, I try to find a Wi-Fi zone so I can connect to the Internet and do my regular online routines.
My laptop is also among my most important must-haves in my client meetings because I have the habit of popping it open to show my business companions the presentations or whatever files I have on my hard disk or portable memory to emphasize my point or for illustrative purposes. I'm always known to have a laptop computer with me so that my companions often don't bother to bring theirs and just have their USB devices ready to be inserted in my computer whenever they have anything to show in our meetings.
I actually have several laptop and desktop computers in my possession. I have two desktop computers at home, one for my personal use and the other one for the kids to play games on. There are times when both my two kids want to play computer games at the same time and they fight over who's going to use the desktop computer. When this happens, I just let the other one use my own desktop computer and I just revert to either one of my two laptops.
Sometimes I feel that we're losing some precious bonding time because we're each busy with our own worlds in front of our respective computer screens. But it also becomes one unconventional bonding time for us especially when we all choose to play online games together. We may be busy seated at our individual computer stations but somewhere in cyberspace we are all together playing online games with each other. It actually is a lot of fun, and the best about it is that we get to discuss it over dinner once we're done playing with each other. Those are priceless moments, in my opinion.
Anyway, I'm planning to get another laptop computer which I can give to my elder daughter on her birthday. That way, she'll have her own computer that she can bring with her anywhere. Besides, it will free up our other desktop computer at home so that she will not have to fight over it with her sister. I'm availing of some
